Ex-principal enters plea for failing to report alleged abuse

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A former Rhode Island grade-school principal has pleaded no contest to failing to report students' allegations of sexual abuse against a gym teacher to the state.

Attorney General Peter Neronha's office says Violet LeMar entered the plea for failing to report the alleged abuse in violation of the state's mandatory reporting law.

Two elementary school students say they reported the abuse to LeMar in May 2017.

LeMar was convicted in 2018 of a single misdemeanor count of failing to report alleged sexual abuse of a child to DCYF within 24 hours. LeMar appealed to Superior Court.

Her lawyer, Thomas Gulick, told The Providence Journal LeMar entered a plea because it has been two years since she was charged and she wanted to spare the students from having to testify again.
