William McNabb had watched the coverage of the two mass shootings. Twenty-two people died after a man walked into a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, on Aug. 3 and opened fire. After midnight the next day, another gunman killed nine more in a historic district in Dayton, Ohio.
The shootings reignited a national debate about gun laws in the United States, and whether new restrictions on guns need to be considered.
