Let's Talk About It, Oklahoma at Alva Public Library

August 30, 2019

Friends of the Alva Public Library will host Let's Talk About It, Oklahoma's program "Working to Survive: Surviving to Work" at five events from Sept. 23 through Nov. 18. The event is made possible by a grant from Oklahoma Humanities with generous funding from the Inasmuch Foundation and the Kirkpatrick Family Fund.

Let's Talk About It, Oklahoma is a program that brings readers and humanities scholars together to discuss works of literature about a specific theme. The five books in this series offer a variety of perspectives concerning individuality and work through different historical and cultural contexts. These works will allow readers to discuss not only the economic and social value of work, but also what other purposes work serves on the individual level: a sense of purpose, emotional fulfillment, social acceptance, and more. We will also discuss how these texts contribute to our understanding of the implicit connection between hard work and the American dream. All five books are available to be picked up at the Alva Public Library

Working to Survive will include well-known novels and non-fiction pieces that investigate the benefits and costs of a life's work. Dr. Roxie James will introduce Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" on Sept. 23; Dr. Kay Decker will discuss Kathryn Stockett's "The Help" on Oct. 7; Joanne Prewett will introduce Barbara Ehrenreich's "Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America" on Oct. 21; Herman Melville's "Bartleby the Scrivener:" A Story of Wall Street will be the topic of Dr. Sara Jane Richter's presentation on Nov. 4; and Dr. Aaron Mason will lead a discussion on Don J. Snyder's "The Cliff Walk: A Job Lost and a Life Found" on Nov. 18. All events will be held at Alva Public Library (504 7th St.) on Monday evenings at 6:30 p.m.
