Luis and Bailey Chavez: Top male and female runners of Kiowa's Labor Day 5K Race

September 4, 2019

Bailey Chavez is the fastest female in Kiowa's Labor Day 5K Race and 4th overall with a tome of 21.04. Luis won Kiowa's Labor Day Race 5K Race for the fourth consecutive year. His time was 16.41.

On Labor Day the 5K Race in Kiowa, Kansas, celebrated 35 years. Former Alvan Luis Chavez celebrated winning the race for the fourth consecutive year Monday.

The overall winner, Chavez finished with a time of 16:41. The Chavez family had a double celebration as his wife Bailey was the fastest woman in the race and fourth overall with a time of 21:04.

The couple not only ran the 5K, they ran the course backwards as a "warm-up." Following the real race, Luis and Bailey again ran the course backwards as a "cool down." So, the two runners got in a total of nine miles each that morning.

Luis has run numerous marathons. Together they ran "Grandma's Marathon" in Duluth, Minnesota, in June. That was Bailey's first marathon. Both qualified for the coveted Boston Marathon in April 2020. Currently the couple is training for the Prairie Fire Half Marathon in Wichita, Kansas, in October.

The Chavez couple has lived in Edmond nearly a year. A 2016 NWOSU grad, Luis works at Red Coyote Running and Fitness (a specialty store). Bailey is finishing her last semester at NWOSU and is student teaching in Edmond.
