Apple pie

September signals the start of the fall season with its official beginning on the 23rd. I know Autumn is arriving as the apples have ripened on our tree in the 300 block of Flynn.

Apples are a great American fruit, whose history dates back to the Massachusetts Bay Colony when the settlers brought them from England and found them a good fit for the climate of the Atlantic Coast. Apple pie was the result of the conversion of traditional kidney and mincemeat fillings from the British Isles to sweet pies filled with fruit. The crust changed too when lard from pigs gave it a lighter and flakie...
