SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Plans for a trail system would connect 32 miles across upstate South Carolina, in what a health-promotion group is calling the Daniel Morgan Trail System.

The plan by Partners for Active Living will connect current trails throughout Spartanburg County, adding five major new trails, the Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reports. The trail system would ultimately run from the Pacolet River to the Middle and North Tyger Rivers. It could be complete by 2021.

The system would be named after Dan Morgan, the Revolutionary War general who won a famous victory at the Battle of Cowpens. Partners for Active Living Executive Director Laura Ringo said the trails will cover some of the same paths that Morgan's troops used.

Mary Black Foundation President and CEO Molly Talbot-Metz said the organization will donate $1 million toward the cost of the expansion, bringing the total amount of money raised for the trail system to $8.4 million in combined public and private funds.

Some trails already have been added, and work will begin on some additional trails within weeks. John Montgomery, a member of the trail system's committee, said the group hopes for future expansions, including a connection to the Palmetto Trail at the University of South Carolina Upstate.

"Once this is done, we will keep expanding this," Montgomery said.
