WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Led by freshman Maicee Morgan's first career double-double, the SWOSU Volleyball team held off the University of the Southwest for a four-set victory on Tuesday evening at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
Morgan finished with 19 kills and 14 digs – both career highs – and hit .381 for the match to lead the way for SWOSU, who hit .263 as a team with 56 kills and 15 hitting errors on 156 total attempts. Chezney Nielsen added 10 kills and seven digs while Emma Cohalla had seven kills and four blocks (one solo, three assist) as the trio of newcomers accounted for more than 60 percent of SWOSU's points scored.
After holding USW to a negative hitting percentage in the first set and .029 in the second, SWOSU gave up a combined 29 kills in the third and fourth sets as the Mustangs took the third and nearly pushed the match to a deciding fifth set. In the fourth, SWOSU saw a 20-14 lead shrink to 20-18 before Morgan put things away by recording the team's final four points of the match with kills to conclude her career night.
Allie Hoang totaled 44 assists and eight digs in the match along with four service aces while Kaitlyn Dillon led the Bulldogs with 17 digs. Jenny Tackett and Brylee Burroughs added six kills and one block apiece.
SWOSU, now 3-2 on the year, heads to Texas this weekend to compete in the LCU Chap Classic. Their first match will be against tournament host, Lubbock Christian, on Thursday evening at 7:00 pm.
