September 13, 2019

DALLAS, Texas – Oklahoma Baptist went 1-1 on Friday to open their weekend tour of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, dropping Pace, 3-1, before suffering five-set heartbreak to host Dallas Baptist, 3-2.

Match 1

Oklahoma Baptist 3, Pace 1

The Bison got out to a blistering start in the first set, laying down 14 kills while hitting at a .355 clip. Though they dropped the second set by a score of 25-21, OBU rallied back with two dominant performances in the final two frames to secure their third-straight 3-1 win.

Malia Leatherland's 12 kills headlined an offensive onslaught that also saw Brenna Holley, Brecken Roquemore, and Taryn Weber each finish with 10 kills. All four at hit at .261 or better on at least 14 attack attempts while OBU hit .282 for the match, their most efficient performance of the young season. That efficiency was in large part due to the service of Rylen Moore and Kaylee Buell who handed out 22 and 19 assists, respectively.

Defensively, Taneyah Brown and Holley ended with a team-best three total blocks. Diana Carranza posted 20 digs, and Buell and Leatherland completed double-doubles with 11 and 10 digs apiece. It was Buell's first career double-double in the Green and Gold, and both her assist and dig totals represent career highs.

Match 2

Dallas Baptist 3, Oklahoma Baptist 2

The Bison were unable to claim the Friday sweep despite playing for match point at 24-22 in the fourth set. The Patriots used a four-point run to close out the set, 26-24, forcing the decisive fifth set.

After battling back to tie the fifth set 11-11, the Bison were unfortunate to see DBU use another three-point streak to bring up their own match point up 14-11. Sydney Price scored a kill off a Moore feed, but ultimately OBU fell on the next point.

Leatherland and Daniel did the heavy lifting for OBU in the second match of the day, combining for 27 kills, while Moore and Buell had nearly identical assists totals from the win against Pace with 23 and 19 apiece.

Carranza again paced OBU defensively with 27 digs. Buell, Daniel, Leatherland, and Moore all completed double-doubles after combining for 72 of OBU's 121 digs.

Oklahoma Baptist now turns their sights to Texas Woman's. First serve is set for 10 a.m. Saturday in Denton.
