Volleyball: Golden Suns drop two matches in Nebrasks

KEARNEY, Neb. – The Golden Suns fell to #22 Rockhurst University and #8 University of Nebraska-Kearney in straight sets, as Tech could not handle the hot hitting of the Hawks and the Lopers. Tech was held to a .047 hitting percentage compared to Rockhurst's .357 clip and .103 to UNK's .296.

The Golden Suns will face University of Mary in their third match of the Rosella Meier Fall Classic in the Health & Sports Center at Nebraska-Kearney in Kearney, Neb. Saturday at 10 a.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Golden Suns started the first set, winning the first three points but were unable to hold onto the small lead and Rockhurst used several 5-0 runs to take the first set 25-12.

The Hawks jumped out to a 12-6 lead before Tech got within three after back-to-back aces from Brianna Merkel.

Rockhurst extended their lead and took the second set 25-15.

The Hawks used a 10-2 run to start the third set and led by as many as 12.

Rockhurst won the third set 25-15 and the match.

NOTABLES

Merkel dished out team-high 19 assists.

Madison Grantham led Tech with eight digs.

Haylee Paladini had team-best .333 hitting percentage on nine swings with four kills.

UNK

HOW IT HAPPENED

UNK took a 6-3 lead before Tech tied things up 8-8 after back-to-back errors from the Lopers.

The Lopers went on a 5-0 to lead 13-8 and maintained the lead to take the first set 25-14.

UNK went up 13-7 and led by as many as ten, taking the second set 25-17.

The Lopers took another early lead, 9-4, before Tech clawed back within three.

UNK extended their lead to seven and took the third set and the match 25-18.

NOTABLES

Anyse Smith had match-high 13 kills.

Mackenzie Eford led both teams with five blocks.

Merkel led the team with 26 assists.
