Most Sundays at the First Presbyterian Church of Alva, you will find sitting in the pews a creative individual who uses her crocheting talent to bring joy to others. Ida Evans is that gifted woman. For many years, and through many skeins of yarn Evans has created a multitude of prayer shawls for those she feels led to comfort with her gift. The beautifully crocheted shawls are presented to those facing health struggles, the birth of a new baby, or any number of life's challenges and blessings.

On Sunday, Oct. 13, Ida Evans presented her latest prayer shawl to Tena Ruggia, wife of Pastor Bud Ruggia.

A prayer shawl is a wearable embrace made with love, time and talent. Once she feels led to create a shawl for someone, Evans questions those close to the individual about what colors they like in order to keep the gift a surprise. After the shawl is completed, Evans invites the pastor to bless it, and then she presents the shawl to the receiver. When the receiver wears the gift, they have a visible memento of the care and prayers directed their way.
