Soccer: Bison Edge Past SWOSU in Heavyweight Bout

October 18, 2019

SHAWNEE – Used to impacting matches more with her hands than her feet, Emily Griffith notched the lone goal of the evening in a clash of conference titans on Thursday night in Great American Conference action.

Coming into Thursday night, just two points separated perennial Great American Conference favorites Oklahoma Baptist and Southwestern Oklahoma State. The Bison, unbeaten in their previous four regular-season matches against SWOSU, rode a strong defensive performance and a timely goal to dispatch the Bulldogs, 1-0.

Coming on as a first-half substitute, Griffith found herself in the right place at the right time almost immediately after stepping on the pitch. A free kick whipped into the box by Kelsey Bumgarner was headed on by Lara Haring-Lovett, setting Griffith up for a tap-in in the 26th minute of play.

Neither side offered up much in the way of offense as the match progressed, as the Bison and Dawgs combined for just eight shots in the second half. Only two of those shots were on goal.

Madison Morgan, making her third appearance between the sticks for OBU due to Griffith's injured hand, proved even when to the task when necessary. The jack-of-all-trades freshman from Anchorage, Alaska finished with four saves and her second-straight clean sheet.

Oklahoma Baptist (7-4-1, 5-1 GAC) returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 19 when they welcome Northwestern Oklahoma State to the OBU Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 3 PM.
