First Christian to hold 125th Anniversary celebration this weekend

1. Construction of the church building located on the corner of Fifth and Church began in May 1990 with Rev. Swift as pastor. The Building was dedicated May 5, 1901, by Rev. William Munday, and Elder Lee B. Myers conducted the services. At the dedication service, enough money was donated to pay all but $580 of the church indebtedness. 2. On Nov. 12, 1950, under the leadership of Rev. Charles T. Hudson, First Christian dedicated a new church at the corner of Church and Maple (shown here in a drawing). The sanctuary has a seating capacity of 350 with a maximum capacity of 425. The building also encompasses a large Fellowship Hall and many rooms for Bible school departments and classes. 3. During 2016-17, the congregation voted to have plans dawn for the foyer expansion and a Capital Campaign Committee was appointed to oversee this large project. The positive vote of the congregation on the new foyer addition with bathrooms on the first floor shows the willingness of the church to take care of a larger inside space for members and guests to gather before and after church, especially during bad weather. This project was completed, decorated and finally dedicated on Sept. 9, 2018.

Way back in 1894, the year after the opening of the Cherokee Strip in 1893, a group of earnest Christians joined to form Alva's First Christian Church (FCC).

FCC will celebrate its 125th anniversary this weekend, Oct. 26-27.

"All members are a part of that history," said Joyce Egner, an FCC member who is organizing the celebration. "We would like to pay tribute to those of the past who have given so much."

The celebration will begin on Saturday, when church members will ride a float that celebrates the church's long history. It will also, said organizer Egner, reflect the theme of the parad...
