Rangers run over by Bison 34-25

NWOSU went head-to-head against the Oklahoma Baptist University Bison Saturday afternoon in Alva, losing 34-25. NWOSU senior Jacob Peyton dodges a tackle from an OBU Bison as he heads toward the end zone in Saturday afternoon's game.

The Northwestern Rangers hosted the Oklahoma Baptist Bison Saturday afternoon at Ranger Field. OBU led 28-10 at the half. Although NWOSU held the Bison scoreless in the third quarter, they couldn't overcome the first half deficit and lost 34-25.

OBU put the first two touchdowns on the scoreboard. T. Stuever made a 56 yard run with 9:59 on the clock, and L. Wendl's kick was good for a 7-0 lead. The Bison scored again at the 5:24 mark on a one yard run by Stuever and the point after kick by Wendl for a score of 14-0 in OBU's favor.

With 1:59 left in the first period, Northwestern's Conner O'Neal kicked a 28 yard field goal, and NWOSU trailed 14-3 at the end of the quarter.

The Rangers scored first in the second quarter with a Jacob Peyton one yard run and an O'Neal kick to narrow the margin to 14-10. Then OBU had two successive touchdowns on a J. Cornell five yard pass from P. Haire and an S. Garner 16 yard pass from Haire. Wendl connected on both kicks, and the Bison led 28-10 at the half.


It looked like the third quarter would be scoreless until O'Neal kicked a 23 yard field goal for the Rangers with 1:43 left. That put the score at OBU 28, NWOSU 13.

In the fourth quarter, Stuever made a 12 yard touchdown run, but Wendl's kick failed. OBU led 34-13. The Rangers scored on a three yard run by Calion Baker, but O'Neal's kick missed the uprights. With 4:06 left in the game, Garner scored on a 16 yard pass from Tanner Clarkson. O'Neal's kick failed, and OBU won 34-25.

For the Rangers, Trent Easley connected on 17 of 27 pass attempts for a total of 139 yards. Clarkson made six of eight passing attempts for 102 yards. Pass receiving was spread around with Garner catching six for 61 yards and Kentrez Bell five for 62 yards. Others catching passes were Torrence Steven with four, Brian Gonzalez with three, Matthew Caputo with three, and one each for Kevin Ford and Peyton. Peyton was the leading rusher with 47 yards followed by Kenny Miller with 23 and Easley with 21.


OBU had 476 yards total offense in the game with 190 passing and 286 on the ground. NWOSU rushed for 105 yards and passed for 241 for a total of 346.

The Rangers travel to Bethany next Saturday for a 3 p.m. game at Southern Nazarene University. That will be followed by the final game of the regular season when NWOSU hosts Southwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday, Nov. 16.
