Elmo and LaVida Anderson of Helena

Elmo and LaVida Anderson of Helena will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, Nov. 13.

This love affair began many years ago at the Shoemaker's Drugstore in Alva. It was love at first site for LaVida, who said, "I worked in a drugstore and one day this handsome man came in the store with his face all black and blue. He had been in a car wreck and I fell in love with him." And Elmo liked the look of her right away, saying, "I met this cute little soda jerk who had come in from the hills of Alva."

Elmo and LaVida were married Friday, Nov. 13, 1954, in Cherokee by Reverend Bill Keller. After earning a teaching degree at Northwestern State College in Alva, Elmo and his bride moved to Gueda Springs, Kansas, and then six years later they landed in Helena. It was in Helena that this young couple found their home. Elmo began teaching at the State Training School for Boys and the James Crabtree Correctional Facility, while LaVida cooked at the elementary school, worked at the Ro-Mel Nursing Home, and in 1981 she began working at the Enid State School. Elmo retired from teaching in 1986 and LaVida retired in 1991.

During their respective careers, Elmo and LaVida made a home with their son and daughter and became members of the First Christian Church. They devoted time to supporting both the Helena-Goltry and Timberlake Tigers sports teams, camping, gardening, raising cattle and spending time with family.

Elmo and LaVida's son Gary Anderson and wife Holly (of Theriot, Louisiana), and daughter Lynnette Bryant and her husband James (of Ada, Oklahoma) have gone on to provide our couple with five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Amongst all their activities, they also spent a lot of time on the road in order to catch ballgames or events involving any of the grand, great or great-great grandchildren.

During their 65 years of marriage, Elmo and LaVida have been blessed beyond measure with friendship, love and family. We wish them a very happy celebration!
