Northwestern Earns First Win of the 2019-2020 Season

Men's Basketball Posted: November 10, 2019 ALVA, Okla.- Northwestern Oklahoma State University men's basketball earned their first win of the 2019-2020 year as they played their second game in as many days in Percefull Fieldhouse. The Rangers hosted the GAC/MIAA/NSIC Challenge through the weekend and the Black-and-Red came in with a different attitude to rebound against the University of Central Oklahoma after their loss the evening before. After an early battle the Rangers began to pull away and took the win 63-55. Junior transfer Parrish Hewitt lead the team with an outstanding 28 points, nine rebounds, and one block while going 6-of-8 from deep. Northwestern started off a bit slow as they fell behind early but a timely three point shot from Nathan Bailey gave the Rangers their first lead of the game 12-10. The Black-and-Red pulled away to a six-point lead, but the Broncos came rushing back to take the lead 19-18. A huge slam from Bryshon Bryant brought the momentum back to NWOSU. Back-to-back threes from Hewitt gave the Rangers their biggest lead of the first half 29-21. The first half ended at a score of 29-23 in Northwestern's favor. The Black-and-Red continued to hold their lead through most of the second half. The Bronchos began to chip away at the lead as a dunk cut the lead to only six, 57-51 with only three minutes left in the half, but Hewitt answered quickly with a three of his own to snatch back the rhythm. The end of the game turned into a free-throw battle as both teams tallied ten or more fouls. A huge block from David Thornton rallied the Rangers and allowed them to secure the win 63-55. The Black-and-Red outscored their opponent in points from their bench with 18 to UCO's 15. Northwestern shot 44% from the field in the second half but had a 56.52% from the free-throw line. The Bronchos outscored the Rangers after turnovers with 13 to Northwestern's seven. However, NWOSU outrebounded UCO with 37 to their 30 boards, while scoring ten threes compared to Central Oklahoma's three shots taken beyond the arc. Notable players include Hewitt who was mentioned earlier as well as senior Jaedon Whitfield who had 9 points, four rebounds and two steals. Bailey earned himself eight points in the match-up with four rebounds of his own. The Rangers will wait a week before they head to Wichita, Kan. for their first away game of the season against Newman University Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Nov. 16.
