Olive Margaret Powell Appleton was born March 11, 1923, in Jackson, Mississippi, to Ada Reeves Powell and Martin Powell. Olive grew up in a large extended family in Pike and Walthall counties in Mississippi. After graduating from Mississippi College in 1943 she took a job teaching school in Baltimore, Maryland. She earned a Master's of Religious Education from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1947, and married Vincent Braly Appleton that year.

Olive and Vincent served congregations in Kentucky, Indiana, California, Germany, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Iowa, and the United Arab Emirates. Oli...
