Jessica Jahay wins Kiowa's VFW Patriot's Pen essay contest

South Barber eighth grader Jessica Jahay is the local winner of the VFW nationwide Patriot's Pen essay contest. She presented her paper at Kiowa's Veterans Day Program at South Barber High School. She also read her "What Makes America Great" essay at the Veteran's Day evening dinner sponsored by Kiowa's American Legion Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary.

This year 12 of the eighth-grade students at South Barber Middle School wrote an essay for the local VFW Patriot's Pen contest. Retired English teacher Melva Armbruster judged and selected the essay written by Jessica Jahay as the winner.

She is one of thousands of sixth through eighth graders nationwide who compete in the Patriot's Pen contest sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary. The Kiowa VFW Post 5982 and Auxiliary sponsor on the local level and award monetary gifts to winners. Winning entries from individual Posts go to the District level and those winners advance to Nation...
