Some of the pre-K through third-grade students salute while they sing the "Armed Forces Medley."

Burlington schools recently honored veterans in an assembly on the morning of Veteran's Day. The auditorium was full of decorations and artwork created by the elementary teachers and students.

Veteran Marine Robert Kraft of Burlington stands and salutes during the "Marines' Hymn" of the "Armed Forces Medley." Kraft is 92 and was the only former Marine in attendance at the Burlington school Veterans Day Assembly.

Burlington seniors led the assembly which started with the Call to Colors, Pledge of Allegiance and "Star Spangled Banner" sung by the junior high and high school choir.

After a prayer of invocation and recognition of veterans, the pre-K through third grade sang a rousing and entertaining rendition of the "Armed Forces Medley." The fourth through sixth grades followed with "America the Beautiful."

The speaker was retired Lieutenant Colonel Skeeter Bird. Bird offered "Ten Rules for Leadership" that he learned from his time in the military. His leadership guidance, stories of his time in the military and light-hearted presentation were enjoyed by the audience.

The celebration ended with "Taps." A soup luncheon for veterans and their guests after the assembly was provided by the elementary faculty.
