Waynoka woman charged with meth distribution

December 15, 2019

With the help of a confidential source, Waynoka police stopped a vehicle and recovered meth valued at about $2,000.

Court documents show on Aug. 26, Waynoka Police Chief Misty Smiley was contacted by a confidential source (CS) who reported being approached by Natalie Steffen on several occasions trying to sell methamphetamine. The CS did not want to be around anyone using or selling meth.

On Sept. 2 about 1:30 p.m. Smiley was contacted by the CS advising Steffen was trying to get a ride to Woodward and had an unusually large amount of meth and marijuana on her person. The suspected meth was described as being contained in three small glass vials inside a large black tubular container. Steffen was also trying to get the CS to purchase some meth before taking her to Woodward.

The CS later contacted Smiley saying Steffen was traveling to Woodward in a white vehicle with the illegal narcotics in her backpack. Smiley notified Officer Nathan Rackley about the vehicle, which was headed south out of Waynoka on U.S. Highway 281.

Rackley conducted a traffic stop and placed Steffen under arrest for an active arrest warrant, placing her in the rear seat of his patrol vehicle. Rackley then requested Smiley and her K9 partner to assist him on the traffic stop. Smiley deployed K9 Ike in an open air screen of the vehicle. K9 Ike displayed a positive reaction to the odor of illegal narcotics in the vehicle.

Smiley asked the driver to exit the vehicle. The driver stated Steffen had been throwing stuff out of the passenger side window while they were being pulled over. Smiley went back to the location described and found a black container with three vials with packages inside containing more small baggies with a crystal like substance. She also located a small green container that contained marijuana. Both were consistent with the description the CS had given of what Steffen had on her person.

At the Waynoka Police Department, Steffen was read the Miranda waiver and voluntarily agreed to waive her rights. She admitted to possessing the meth and throwing it out the window of the moving vehicle, according to affidavit. She also admitted to using, selling and distributing methamphetamine for the last several months.

All the suspected methamphetamine was weighed at approximately 15.5 grams with an approximate street value of $2,000.

Natalie Ann Steffen, 34, of Gage, has been charged with possession of controlled dangerous substance (methamphetamine) with intent to distribute. This felony crime is punishable by imprisonment for up to seven years and a fine of up to $100,000.
