Developing a skill set leads to repurposed art

Turning old objects into lights has become a hobby and an art form for Nick Bradt of Alva. His work is on display at Graceful Arts Gallery in Alva this month.

Skills picked up in his full time job put Nick Bradt on the path to a hobby that has become an art form. Bradt grew up in Alva and has been teaching high school competitive speech, theater and debate here for 15 years.

Bradt describes what he does as repurposed and reimagined art. "I make a lot of lights out of antiques, some furniture out of stuff that wasn't supposed to be furniture," he said. He's made lights out of antique pulleys, microscopes and old musical instruments. "If I can find it and think I can make a light out of it, I turn it into a light," said Bradt.
