Kansas Highway Patrol: 1 dead, 1 seriously injured in crash

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — One person died and another was seriously injured in a crash just west of Topeka in Shawnee County, the Kansas Highway Patrol reported.

The single-vehicle crash happened around 6:30 p.m. Friday on eastbound Interstate 70, the Capital-Journal reported. Investigators said the crash occurred when the vehicle drove into the median, went airborne over a creek, and then hit the creek embankment and a bridge pillar.

Carlos Colon-Medina, 29, of Topeka, was a passenger in the vehicle and died at the scene. The driver, Michael McElheny, 23, of Perry, was taken to Stormont Vail Hospital with serious injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
