Chisholm breaks Ladybug winning streak 50-48

After nearly a week off, the Alva Ladybugs had a cold start in their game against Chisholm Friday night. The Ladybugs won the Wheat Capital Tournament championship last Saturday against Kingfisher. Their path to the title included a fiercely contested Friday win against the Chisholm Lady Longhorns 62-59. Alva also played an away game at Chisholm to start their basketball season on Dec. 3 with the Ladybugs winning 50-36.
On their home court Friday, the Ladybugs were never able to overcome the deficit of the first quarter, losing to Chisholm 50-48. After putting the first points on the board, Alva led one more time and tied the score twice in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Longhorns outscored Alva 21-9 in the first quarter. Although the Ladybugs scored more than the twice the points made by Chisholm in the second, they trailed 28-25 at the half. Third quarter scoring was about even with Chisholm scoring eight points and Alva seven. Even in the fourth quarter, the Lady Longhorns only outscored Alva 16-14.
The Ladybugs were without usual starter Rianna Clark who is still recovering from an injury. Courtney Petersen, top scorer for Chisholm in the Jan. 9 game, also did not play.
First Half
The Ladybugs controlled the tipoff, and Acacia Charles laid one in off the glass to put the first two points up for Alva. Charles was fouled but missed the free throw. Paden Pasby responded with a basket to tie. After Alva's next two attempts didn't go through the net. Pasby was fouled and made one of two, putting the Lady Longhorns up 3-2.
Alva's Brooke Perez was fouled in shooting and missed both free throws. Lady Longhorn Tatum Sefcik scored two points. After one basket attempt by Chisholm and two by Alva, Chisholm's Gracie Holder dropped in a three-pointer from the corner. Following two more scoring attempts by the Ladybugs, Perez was able get the ball through the hoop. Chisholm now led 8-4.
Both teams made several unsuccessful trips to the basket. Payton Jones hit a layup but was called for an offensive foul so it didn't count. Then Tatum Long made two successive baskets to increase the Chisholm lead to 12-4. Charles sank a right wing three. But Long and Alice Watkins put up three-pointers, and the score was 18-7. Charles was fouled while shooting and made both free throws for seven of Alva's first quarter nine points. Pasby added another triple for the first quarter final of 21-9.
The Ladybugs shook off their doldrums in the second quarter and started hitting the basket. Charles began with two points for Alva followed by two from Watkins for Chisholm. Lexie Reihm scored a basket, and Chloe Durkee added a free throw to put Alva within nine points. Chisholm's Brinidey Wilson increased the Lady Longhorn lead with two free throws. Then Jones went to the line, making two free throws. Perez was also fouled and hit both free throws. The score was now 25-18.
Durkee put the Ladybugs within five points with a two point put-back. Pasby hit from three-range, but Alva's Aspen Warren answered with a trey. Jones made a basket just before the quarter ended to put the Ladybugs within three points of the lead at 28-25 going into the half.
In that first half, the Ladybugs made only eight of 31 attempts to score and only two of 12 tries from three-point range.
Second Half
After missing a trey, Durkee hit a basket to lead off the third quarter. However, Long answered with two straight three-pointers. Durkee's next three-point attempt failed to fall through, and Tatum Sefcik hit a basket for Chisholm followed by another from Long. The Lady Longhorns had widened the lead to 36-27.
After several trips up and down the floor for both teams, Reihm hit a layup for Alva. Wilson missed on two free throw chances. Alva made one more basket and Perez hit a free throw to narrow the lead to 36-32 at the end of three periods.
With the close score, both teams came into the fourth quarter with a determination to win. Reihm hit a nice jumper, but Long answered with two from the foul line. Jones sank her first basket from three-point range, and Alva was within one at 38-37.
The Lady Longhorns went on a scoring run with three points by Pasby, two by Long and three by Holder to widen the margin to nine at 46-37. Alva finally got on the board with a free throw from Jaedyn Williams. Reihm hit an Alva basket, and the score was 46-40.
After a timeout, the Ladybugs tightened their defense with full court pressure. Jones was fouled as she went for a right wing three and made two of three chances. The defensive effort was taking a toll with neither team getting near the basket except through fouls. Jones made another trip to the free throw line and sank both shots. Watkins fouled out, and Jones went to the line to make another two free throws, tying the score at 46.
Then Reihm fouled out, and Sefcik went to the line on a one-and-one. She missed the initial shot. Jones was fouled again. That was the fifth on Sefcik who went to the bench. Jones made one of two free throws to put Alva in the lead at 47-46.
Long was next at the free throw line, making one of two chances to tie the score at 47. Alva's Jones fouled out and was benched. Long ran over Charles, and Charles was called for the foul. Long made one of two free throws to put Chisholm up by one. Durkee went to the line for Alva, making one of two chances. The score was tied again at 48 with seconds left in the game.
Pasby finally unlocked the path to the hoop, sinking a basket to put Chisholm on top 50-48. Long went for a basket and was fouled by Charles, her fifth. Long was unsuccessful from the free throw line, and the game ended with the Lady Longhorns winning 50-48.
Wrap-Up
Jones led the Alva scoring with 14 points; 10 of those came in the second half. Reihm followed with 10, Charles nine, Durkee and Perez had six each, Warren three and Williams one. Perez was very active on the boards with 20 rebounds.
Long was the top scorer for Chisholm with 21 followed by Pasby with 12, Holder six, Watkins five, Sefcik four and Wilson two.
With their first loss of the season, the Ladybugs now have a 13-1 record. Chisholm is 7-5.
The Ladybugs are at home next Tuesday when they face Newkirk in a homecoming match-up at 6:30 p.m. In their last meeting Dec. 17, the Ladybugs won 53-36.
Alva will play in the Cashion County Line Tournament beginning Thursday. The Ladybugs have drawn Elk City in a 1:40 p.m. game.
