January 24, 2020
The Alva Goldbugs got a much needed win Tuesday night at home against the Newkirk Tigers, 54-34. The Goldbugs had been winless since the home game against Frontier on Jan. 4.
The Tigers never led during the game Tuesday, but they didn't make Alva's victory easy. The Goldbugs slowly pulled away in the first quarter for a 12-5 margin. Newkirk only scored four points in the second while Alva put in 11 for a halftime spread of 23-9. The Tigers fought hard in the third, making 12 points, but the Goldbugs added 18 for a 20-point lead of 41-21 going into the final period. Both teams scored 13 points in the fourth quarter for the final 54-34 Alva victory.
Senior Reece Martin led the Alva scoring in the first half with seven points. Jackson Feely and Austin Reed had four each, Braden Hofen and Kaden Slater had three apiece and Cole Hague scored two. The only three-pointer in the first half was made by Slater.
Newkirk's scoring push in the third quarter allowed them to get within 12 at one point, but they couldn't overcome the early Alva lead.
Topping the Alva scoring in the game was Martin with 15 followed by Reed with 11 and Hofen 10. Slater contributed eight points, Feely six and Hague two. Hofen was also hot on the boards with 17.
The Goldbugs were effective in negating the usual scoring threat by Tiger Kobe Killscrow, holding him to eight points. Clayton Bergman led the Newkirk scoring with 13. Freshman Landen Vap had seven while Daniel Harrelson and Haydn Wood made three each.
The win moved the Goldbug season record to 4-11, while Newkirk fell to 3-10.
The Goldbugs headed to the Cashion Countyline Tournament on Thursday afternoon.
