February 23, 2020

The Petunia Garden Club met at the Cherokee Strip Museum on Feb. 12 with Sandra Schubert as hostess and Joanne Price as co-hostess.

Following delicious refreshments President Betty McMurphy called the meeting to order. The Gardner Creed was read in unison. Secretary Janet Wanger called roll answering to “Name a flower from another country.” Members present were, Shirley Bellah, Barbara Case, Wanda Cox, Marilyn Davison, Barbara Faulkner, Betty McMurphy, Joanne Price, Eleanor Ring, Sandra Schubert, Janet Wanger and Edith Wiebener.

The January meeting lesson, “Try Amaryllis,” was given by Barbara Faulkner. She gave a list of the different varieties, the zones for growing as well as correct planting and watering required. Amaryllis is a native to South Africa. The Naked Lady is an amaryllis but very few of the amaryllis are perennial.

The February meeting lesson, Plants of Austria, was given by Edith Wiebener, who is from Austria. One thing Edith said that Austria does well is window box displays. Almost every building in Austria is adorned with balcony boxes and planters that transform a house into a colorful feast for the eyes. They not only decorate homes but train stations, shops and hotels. Geraniums and petunias are the main choice of flowers for exterior displays. The national flower of Austria is edelweiss, which is a mountainous flower that blooms between July and September.

Following the lesson the minutes were read by Secretary Janet Wanger and Marilyn Davison gave the treasurer's report. Betty McMurphy reminded everyone of the state convention on May 1 and 2 in Atoka and registration is due by April 17.

The district convention will be in Guymon on March 28.

Garden Club members took candy to Beadles Nursing Home for Valentine's Day.

Everyone received a box of chocolate from Dandra on Valentine's Day. Shirley Bellah won the door prize, a beautiful rose bouquet.

The next Petunia Garden Club meeting will be March 11 at Barbara Faulkner's home with here as hostess and Edith Wiebener as co-hostess.
