Tulip Garden Club Valentine party

February 23, 2020

April Ridgway hosted a Valentine-themed brunch for the monthly meeting of the Tulip Garden Club at the home of Alyson Yoder on Feb. 13. Members present were Rhonda Fields, Genevieve Farris, Becky Smith, Mary Ann Crow, Helen Janzen, Li Brooks, Linda McCoy, and April Ridgway. Large red paper roses decorated the table while members enjoyed a breakfast casserole, fruit salad, and cinnamon bread, along with mango green tea, coffee or water. Each person received a chocolate cake pop and an exquisite boxed Valentine cookie for favors.

President Becky Smith called the meeting to order with members reading "The Gardener's Creed." Members responded to roll call by answering if they grow succulents. The minutes of the last meeting were read by Linda McCoy, and approved as read. Rhonda Fields gave the treasurer's report. Fields purchased a bird feeder and bag of birdseed for the Homestead Retirement Center. The Homestead manager was thrilled for the donation and promised to hang it in the back yard so the residents could enjoy watching the birds while they were dining every day.

April Ridgway distributed the student contest materials to teachers at Longfellow School and notified Guymon clubs to mail in their entries by Feb. 24. The date for judging butterfly and wildflower contest entries has since been postponed until Monday, March 2, at the Alva Senior Center.

Members were reminded to check their emails for registration forms to attend the state garden club convention hosted by the Southeast District in Atoka on May 1-2. Several expressed interest in attending. The date of the district spring meeting was announced for Saturday, March 28, in Guymon, and all district officers were encouraged to attend.

Genevieve Farris asked for photos to be sent to her for the district scrapbook.

Rhonda Fields mentioned that an OSU extension workshop on planting fruit trees will be held at Perkins this March.

In lieu of a regular lesson on growing succulents, members shared stories about their personal experiences growing succulents, most of which centered on unpleasant encounters with cactus stickers and methods of removing them.

Mary Ann Crow was the lucky recipient of the hostess gift – a beautiful cake pops/chocolate high heel arrangement.

Becky Smith reminded members that dues for next year will be collected at the March meeting, which will be held on March 12 at Linda McCoy's home.
