Old wooden railroad bridge blazes like an inferno Saturday

Billowing black smoke and flames could be seen for miles from northeast of Kiowa, Kansas, late Saturday afternoon.

Kiowa Fire Chief Roger Robison said for an unknown reason the old wooden bridge underneath the BNSF double track railroad less than one mile northeast of Kiowa caught on fire. This is at the Medicine River Bridge 5/8ths to 3/4ths of a mile along K2 highway northeast from Kiowa.

Robison said BNSF told him that a train conductor headed to Alva crossed that area at 4 p.m., and saw no smoke or flames. Staff from a train coming to the Kiowa area from Alva at 4:17 p.m., reported th...
