Northwestern Oklahoma State University follows the state and national trend with a decrease in enrollment for the spring 2020 semester.

A total of 1,765 students are enrolled in spring classes, which is 2.9 percent fewer than last year.

At the main campus in Alva, 1,086 students are enrolled. Enrollment at the Enid location decreased by 12.8 percent with a total of 223, while enrollment at the Woodward site is 188, a decrease of 13.3 percent.

Northwestern’s outreach sites, including the University Center of Ponca City, reported enrollment of 86 students. As for online courses, 867 students are enrolled in at least one online course.

While enrollment declines at a state and national level, Northwestern’s graduate school boasts a 3.8 percent increase in enrollment. Concurrent classes, classes for qualifying high school juniors and seniors, continue to increase in headcount and credit hours with 63 percent and 82 percent, respectively.

“I am confident in our recruitment team and their abilities to bring in new students,” said Calleb Mosburg, dean of student affairs and enrollment management. “Our team travels daily speaking to high schools and educating our region on the opportunities Northwestern offers.”

The recruitment office at Northwestern recently held its spring showcase event that allows potential students to receive a $500 scholarship. The event was very well-attended with 108 high school seniors and transfer students attending.

“Students are able to talk with current students and faculty, tour the campus, and visit organizations that have set up booths,” Mosburg said. “Once we get them on campus, it’s easier for that person to imagine themselves here.”

Although the numbers have decreased, Northwestern continues to be recognized for outstanding educational opportunities and lower costs compared to many schools in the state.
