How did you spend your day off?

Saturday and young people hanging out with their friends seem to go hand in hand. For a change of pace, four of the First Presbyterian Church Youth Group members did just that; however, their spin on hanging out with friends involved volunteering their time to assist at a local icon.

On Saturday afternoon, March 7, these youth and Youth Director Greg Smith gathered at the Alva City Pool. These young men donned dust masks due to sandblasting taking place nearby them. The winds were high that day, so the sand and paint swirled and whipped in the volunteers' faces.

Charles Shafer, Bentley Cox, Harley Shiplet and Jim Beason came to work, and work they did. These young men took on the task of removing tar and other fillers from the seams in the pool. Their job did not end here. They also shoveled and removed the filler remnants, along with the sand and paint being removed from the walls and bottom of the pool. These young men didn't merely volunteer an hour or two, they worked from about 1 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.

"Great job! Thank you for helping your community, and for being good role models for other young people who might be hesitant to volunteer," said First Presbyterian Youth Director Greg Smith.
