Blizzard strikes, shutting Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming roads

March 20, 2020

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Roads closed Thursday as a blizzard struck the high plains and dumped snow on the Rocky Mountains.

Highways closing included portions of Interstate 70 and I-76 in eastern Colorado. A mix of snow, freezing fog and wind up to 55 mph (88 kph) closed I-80 in southeastern Wyoming and western Nebraska.

The National Weather Service issued blizzard warnings for southeast Wyoming, Colorado's Eastern Plains and the western third of Nebraska.

Forecasters expected a foot (30 centimeters) of snow or more in the northern Colorado mountains.

But most skiers and snowboarders will not get to enjoy it since Colorado's ski resorts are closed through April 6 because of the coronavirus. Those willing to head to the backcountry can still take advantage of the snowfall but the Colorado Department of Transportation warned there would be no accommodations in resort areas along I-70 because of coronavirus restrictions.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol would help ensure any medical supplies related to coronavirus could get through despite the weather, the Wyoming Department of Transportation said in a statement.

The storm will let up Friday but the weather will remain cold until the weekend.
