OSKALOOSA, Kan. (AP) — A Baldwin City woman has been sentenced to life in prison for her role in the 2018 shooting death of her mother's boyfriend.

Ashlyn Hemmerling was sentenced after pleading guilty last year to first-degree murder in the death of Taylor Dean Sawyer, 22, of Lawrence at a remote area of Perry Lake, Jefferson County Attorney Josh Ney announced Wednesday.

Hemmerling's boyfriend, Jonathan Blevins, was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced last year to life with no chance of parole for 50 years. Her mother, Sarah Hemmerling, was initially charged with obstruction but that charge was dropped.

Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig said previously that authorities believe Ashlyn Hemmerling helped plan the homicide. He said the shooting may have been prompted by a domestic dispute and drug use.

Hemmerling's sentencing had been delayed several months because of a change in her counsel and post-trial motions, The Topeka Capital-Journal reported.
