Enid High School puts yard signs commemorating senior class

ENID, Okla. (AP) — Josue Espinal thinks his parents were more excited than he was to see his senior photo on its own yard sign along the sidewalk outside Enid High School last week.

"My mom was like, 'Wow, after all these efforts, all these years, getting to see things the way you want it to,'" Espinal told the Enid News & Eagle. "It gives us the same feeling of things trying to run normal, even though it's obviously not a very normal time."

Espinal's photo was one of more than 365 that the school administration installed last week on Wednesday morning as a way to recognize their graduating seniors, whose final semester has been sidelined by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Photos were provided from yearbook portraits, so not all of the seniors' photos have been placed. The signs also name the senior, class of 2020 and the phrase, "We are so proud of you."

Espinal will graduate with 400 of his classmates during Enid High's virtual ceremony set for May 21. The event will be broadcast on Enid Television Network, YouTube TV and Facebook Live.

"You anticipate getting to see yourself graduate, but it's cool seeing (the yard sign) as a physical reminder of your goals," said Espinal, who will attend Oklahoma Christian University this fall, the first in his family to go to college.

Enid High Principal Dudley Darrow, along with the high school's secretaries and other principals, installed the signs, which were printed by PDQ early morning. Several hundred people stopped by the campus looking for their faces and taking photos. By 5:30 p.m. that same day, he said he still could see students and their families walking around from his office window.

"We are just continually trying to find ways to celebrate our seniors during this difficult time. It's definitely a bag of emotions," Darrow said of the signs, which culminate a spring that saw students and teachers moving to at-home distance learning after public schools were closed statewide in response to the pandemic.

Enid High School also has an in-person graduation ceremony tentatively scheduled for June 18 at D. Bruce Selby Stadium, or at Chisholm Trail Expo Center should inclement weather occur. A third option has an in-person ceremony set for July 30.
