Kansas City police: Officer remains in critical condition

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A Kansas City police officer who was shot in the head during an exchange of gunfire that left a suspect dead was in critical condition Saturday and the family is optimistic, police said.

Police Spokeswoman Officer Doaa El-Ashkar said in an email that critical care doctors say the officer is progressing as expected based on his condition and he remains in the intensive care unit.

Police are not identifying the officer and say his family is asking for privacy.

Highway patrol officials said police were called shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday to a McDonald's restaurant where the suspect in the shooting, 31-year-old Ky Johnson of Grandview, was waving a gun, then fled on foot. The officers chased him, and he turned and opened fire on them, striking one. A second officer fired back, highway patrol officials said.
