Alva man charged with rape of minor child

Jerry Paul Reed, 20, of Alva, has been charged with second degree rape, a felony. He is accused of having sexual intercourse with an 11 year old girl during May 2020. This crime is punishable by imprisonment for one to 15 years.

According to court documents, on July 19 Woods County Communications was notified by the victim’s father about the alleged rape which had occurred in May. Alva Police Officer John Caviness met with the father at his apartment. He said his daughter, age 11, had just disclosed to him that she had been raped by a man who lives in the same apartment complex.

Caviness asked District Attorney Investigator Steve Tanio to assist him in the investigation. Tanio conducted a forensic interview of the victim who said in May 2020 she and her eight-year-old brother had been at Jerry’s apartment and were being babysat by Jerry for the night. She said they watched the movie “Scream” on television in the living room. At the end of the movie, her brother began to fall asleep and Jerry took him to an adjacent room to sleep.

The victim said upon returning Jerry began to “cuddle” with her. He whispered in her ear “just a dream” and removed her clothing. She said he had intercourse with her although she repeatedly told him to stop. Afterward, he pulled her clothing back and up and fell asleep.

The girl told Tanio the next morning Jerry began crying and told her not to tell anyone because he would get in trouble and go to jail. She said she did not immediately report the rape because she was scared. Recently she told her biological mother who immediately told her father.

It was learned the girl’s father had been residing at the apartment complex for the last six months along with the victim and her siblings. He was friends with Jerry, and Jerry was always asking him to send his children to Jerry’s apartment to play video games.

Contact was also made with the apartment complex manager who confirmed that Jerry Reed was residing in an apartment at the complex.

A search warrant was issued for Reed’s apartment. The search was conducted at 9:53 p.m. on July 19. A female was there who said Reed was at work. Law enforcement arrived where Reed was employed and took him into custody without incident.

At 10:08 p.m. after being read his Miranda Rights and agreeing to speak with law enforcement, Reed gave a statement confirming he had sexual intercourse with the girl, according to the affidavit on file. He was transported to the Woods County Jail.

Law enforcement processed Reed’s residence for evidence, observing furniture and a television as described by the victim. Located in plain view in the bedroom shared by Reed’s girlfriend and his eight-month-old infant son, the officers found marijuana and two smoking devices. It was learned that neither Reed nor his girlfriend has a medical marijuana card. The Oklahoma Department of Human Services was contacted regarding this incident, and a referral to them will be made concerning the welfare of the infant.
