The Space Force – branch No. 6 in the arsenal that protects us from foreign encroachment.
It was created in June of 2019 as part of the 2020 defense bill following NATO’S recognition of space as “an operational domain of warfare.”
The current administration may take credit for its naming but it was begun with a directive from President Clinton in 1996 “to develop, operate and maintain space-control capabilities to ensure freedom of action in space and, if directed, to deny such freedom of action to adversaries.”
Those who have mocked its implementation obviously don’t realize the implication of a hostile “space takeover.” Freedom in space has become critical for communications, commerce, air and ground transport, emergency services and national defense. Its purpose goes far beyond the abilities of hackers who would like to disrupt communications and increase vulnerability to threats to security as China has created a strategic support force for satellite launches and has a rapidly improving space program with aspirations to use technology for jamming satellites and creating anti-satellite weaponry.
President Reagan recognized the threat and promoted the use of lasers to disable incoming intercontinental ballistic missiles. Lasers in space is rarely mentioned but surely exists and could be utilized to disable satellites as well.
Russia has launched satellites to “shadow” other satellites for the purpose of “rendezvous and proximity operations” and in 2015 announced the creation of its own Aero-Space Force.
