WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A man who kicked a 1-year-old Black child and yelled racial slurs in a Wichita grocery store was sentenced to prison Thursday after prosecutors said rehabilitation efforts failed.
Trace Riff was sentenced to two years and four months in prison for the December 2018 attack and for drug crimes, The Wichita Eagle reported.
The 1-year-old boy was kicked while he was with his pregnant mother and an older sibling at a Dillon's store. The toddler was not physically injured.
Riff, 33, pleaded no contest in May to attempted aggravated battery, disorderly conduct, unlawful abuse of toxic vapors and meth possession.
Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett told Judge Jeff Syrios Thursday the state's mental health hospital refused to take Riff and he had failed to follow probation rules when he was released from jail in March.
Riff's attorney said Riff, who has schizophrenia and a drug addiction, could be successful on probation with substance abuse and mental health treatment.
The Eagle has reported that Riff was once a successful international model before his life spiraled out of control and he ended up sleeping in dumpsters before his arrest.
