What's the condition of the Alva swimming pool?

September 6, 2020

Are you curious about plans for the Alva Municipal Swimming Pool? The pool was closed by the state health department due to several major problems. With some specified repairs and a plan for the future, the city was allowed to open the pool for the summer of 2019.

However, the city’s plans for tearing out the pool and replacing it with an updated version fell through when voters turned down a proposition for an ad valorem tax on property in the city limits. That tax would have provided funding to proceed on the pool. The city was also seeking a low-interest loan with repayment to be based on the ad valorem tax that would have allowed construction to begin quickly.

Following citizen comments, the mayor and city council formed a Swimming Pool Task Force to address the problem of getting the swimming pool open. The task force had sandblasting done, paid by the city, to remove layers of paint and tar to get a look at the basic problems of the current pool. Then COVID-19 shutdowns stopped progress.
