TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Topeka man who demanded a ride at gunpoint was shot and killed by the man he was threatening, police in Kansas said.

The shooting happened early Sunday morning in the parking lot of a west Topeka apartment complex, the Capital-Journal reported. The incident began when Albert Meade Jr., 29, approached and demanded a ride from a 19-year-old man and 20-year-old woman who had just parked their car in the lot, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said.

When the younger man, who was driving the car, refused, Meade pulled a gun, investigators said. The 19-year-old man then pulled his own gun and shot Meade, who was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. The couple involved in the deadly confrontation were taken into custody, questioned and released, police said.

Court records show Meade served prison time for aggravated battery and attempted robbery linked to a 2014 stabbing at a southeast Topeka service station. Meade was released from prison in August 2019, the newspaper said.
