As a kid, Andy was outdoors during much of the summer months. And not lying by the pool with a Coke in one hand and a fetch-it stick for his dog in the other. His dad started him at age nine to help in the family hay-hauling business, working many times from “can’t see to can’t see.” At the ripe old age of 15, Andy had the responsibility of securing his own workers and heading his own crew, while Dad ran another.

His dad’s system of I-get-the-jobs–and-we’ll-get-’er-done worked well … most of the time. But once, an impending rain storm was to come later that day. Hay lying in the field would be...
