Spiritually Speaking

A last farewell

September 25, 2020

Six short years ago, Lynn Martin posted a picture on the back page of the Review Courier that offended some people. As a result, several local ministers refused to take advantage of Lynn’s invitation to post articles in the Friday edition. The Courier has historically donated column space for such articles, alongside the paper’s ongoing list of churches and meeting times in the Alva area. Being the opportunist that I am, I contacted Lynn and asked permission to publish a weekly column (whether anyone else decided to do so, or not) and Spiritually Speaking was born.

Lynn offered only two guidelines, arising from the same reasoning. Since the newspaper has to be laid out and meticulously arranged each week, he asked that I (a) make sure the column was a consistent length (I chose 350 words and have been able to stay in that general ballpark, with a few articles getting closer to 400 words – sue me, I’m a preacher) and (b) make sure to turn in an article every week. He suggested it might seem easy, at first, but would become more difficult as time went by. He was correct. By my calculations, I’ve missed a couple of issues per year – making my final count around 300 columns in all.

Since Lynn went home, Marione has been quite gracious in encouraging me to continue, as long as I was willing, to contribute to the Courier. This is a task that has been both a privilege and a challenge. Alva can be quite proud of the quality and consistency of their local paper and we should all be thankful that we don’t have Marione’s job. That’s one amazingly busy woman!

I’ve often ended these articles with “See you Sunday” even though most of those who were reading them never set foot inside the College Hill Church of Christ. Since our recent move to Shamrock, Texas, I’ve closed the articles with, well, the end of the article. Please know, you are always welcome and I hope someday to see you in that place where praises are not saved up for Sundays.
