Constitution Day display continues through Oct. 5 at Northwestern

October 2, 2020

Constitution Day 2020 at Northwestern Oklahoma State University is featured in a public informational display through Oct. 5 in the J.W. Martin Library in Alva.

The program is sponsored by the Northwestern Institute for Citizenship Studies. This year's observance involves an examination of the history regarding the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. This event is designed to mark the 100th anniversary of the Federal Constitution's adoption of this amendment.

The 19th Amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote, was formally adopted into the U.S. Constitution by proclamation of Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby. The amendment was the culmination of more than 70 years of struggle by woman suffragists.

Its two sections read simply: "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex" and "Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation."
