Virus hospitalizations in Oklahoma climb; 3 deaths reported

October 7, 2020

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma health officials continue to report a steady increase in the number of people hospitalized as a result of COVID-19, and the state's official death count from the disease caused by the coronavirus increased by three on Monday.

Health officials said there were 665 new confirmed cases of the virus.

The latest numbers from the Oklahoma State Department of Health put the total number of confirmed cases in the state at 91,982. The true number of cases in Oklahoma is likely higher though because many people haven't been tested and studies suggest people can be infected and not feel sick.

The state's count of people who are hospitalized with COVID-19 was 655 through Friday, the most recent data available. That's an increase of 65 people from a week earlier on Sept. 25.

Oklahoma's death count stands at 1,055. Health officials report there are more than 12,772 active cases of the virus and more than 78,155 people have recovered from it.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and a cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
