South Barber's Halloween Parade takes a ghoulish twist for safety

October 21, 2020

You'll soon see little princesses, cowboys, witches, monsters and action figures converging on streets across the nation for Halloween parades.

South Barber School in Kiowa plans to hold their Halloween Downtown Parade on Friday, Oct. 30, at 2:30 p.m. Elementary Assistant Principal Kaynette Scheck said that “safety is always a priority at the school.” Due to COVID-19 concerns, the school has added a few extra safety measures to their protocol. Some of those are:

• Anyone handing out or handling candy must wear gloves.

• Parents will not be allowed in the school to help their child get into their costume. Students may not wear their costume to school. Props such as swords, guns, knives and weapons of any kind are not allowed, even if they are a part of their child's costume.

• Costumes may not mock another student, faculty member, race, religion or lifestyle preferences. No costume masks are to be worn in the classroom or school building but can be worn during the parade.

The parade leaves through the front doors of the school, traveling past the windows at the Kiowa Manor, all the way down Main Street to NAPA and back. If parents want to take their child home after the parade, they must follow protocol and check them out through the front office upon return to school.

In case of inclement weather, (due to COVID concerns) businesses and other patrons may bring their candy to the elementary by noon. Staff will set up tables in the gym that will have a sign of who donated the candy. Paras and other staff will hand out the candy as each class parades through. The school will live stream the "indoor parade" on the South Barber USD 255 website.
