Cases of coronavirus remain high as Thanksgiving break begins

Classes dismissed Friday for a week-long Thanksgiving break at Alva Public Schools and Northwestern Oklahoma State University. The number of active Covid-19 cases in Alva, as reported by the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH), remains high at 154 on Saturday. The weekly NWOSU report on active cases decreased from 44 to 29 Friday including 28 students and one employee among the three campuses at Alva, Enid and Woodward.
Classes will look different for Alva High School and Alva Middle School students when they return on Nov. 30. AHS and AMS will be using an A-B schedule with only half of the students attending in-person classes on a given day.
NWOSU students also return to class on Nov. 30. The fall semester will end with fall commencement on Dec. 6 and finals on Dec. 8-11. Spring classes at NWOSU begin Jan. 11.
Earlier this week Bill Johnson Correctional Center in Alva reported 67 active cases of Covid among inmates and staff. On Friday, that number dropped to eight. The count remains higher at James Crabtree Correctional in Helena, which jumped to 87 on Tuesday but decreased by two at 85 on Friday.
According to the OSDH on Saturday, Alfalfa County has 127 active cases, Harper County 45, Major County 94, Woods County 163 and Woodward County 190.
