OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The number of people hospitalized in Oklahoma with the coronavirus surpassed 1,500 on Saturday and the number of reported cases increased by 3,663, according to the Oklahoma State Department of Health.

The department reported 1,505 hospitalizations, topping the previous one-day high of 1,434 on Wednesday. There was a total of 170,924 reported cases since the start of the pandemic and the seven-day rolling average of new cases in the state has nearly doubled from 1,465 per day on Nov. 6 to 2,843 as of Friday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The true number of infections is likely higher because many people haven't been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected and not feel sick.

The health department reported that a total of 1,624 people have died due to COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and a cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
