Thank goodness for 2021!
January 1, 2021
Any time January 1 rolls around, it is typical for people to wish their friends, relatives, and acquaintances a “Happy New Year!” That tradition has perhaps never been more highly anticipated than in 2021.
Who among us would argue that 2020 was – relatively speaking – an awful year? At least, it was a year like none of us have ever experienced before. The virus that became known as Covid-19 ravaged the United States, killing several hundred thousand Americans.
We had to adjust to the reality of this crisis. Parents had to learn to educate their children at home. Teachers had to learn how to teach online. Some people learned to wear masks. Businesses closed. Millions of people lost their jobs. Sporting events were canceled. The list goes on.
The entire year was unprecedented – and it was not pretty. Many people could not enjoy Thanksgiving or Christmas with their loved ones without risking their lives. Others could not be with their relatives when they were sick and dying.
I believe that most of us hope that we never see another year like 2020. I’m so glad that I get to experience 2021 with its expectation of better days ahead.
I also realize that I have many other things to be thankful for as we turn another page on the calendar. First of all, of course, is the fact that I’m still alive. My family did not experience any deaths in 2020.
I’m thankful that I did not contract the virus, and that my health has remained relatively good. I did not suffer financial hardship in 2020 as thousands and thousands of other Americans did.
In short, I am glad that 2021 is here and that I am alive to see it! I am not only looking forward to experiencing whatever the new year brings but I also hope that I will live to see other years – 2022, 2023, 2024, etc.
And, while I’m at it, I am also hopeful of seeing 2082, 2083, and 2084! I can dream, can’t I? Happy New Year!
