The Alva Ladybugs traveled to Newkirk Tuesday night to play in the new gymnasium. The game was the kind that keeps fans on the edge of their seats and could have gone either way. Going into the contest, the Ladybugs had a 7-2 record while Newkirk was 4-7.
The Alva Ladybugs led 16-10 at the end of the first quarter and were up by one at 22-21 at halftime. At the end of three quarters, Alva was leading 32-28, but in the end the Lady Tigers were victorious 44-41.
Cynthia Samaniego was hot in the first period, scoring ten of the 16 points for Alva including one three-pointer and a free throw. Chloe Durkee contributed a trey and Morgan Heath a basket. Clark hit one free throw.
Early in the second quarter, Newkirk’s Marissa Chase went down hard while trying for a rebound. A long timeout ensued. Chase hobbled off the floor but immediately went down again. Play was delayed until EMT’s arrived to transport her to medical care.
That break in the action threw both teams off their pace, but Newkirk seemed to recover first and pulled within one of the lead. Alva had only three baskets in the quarter with two from Clark and one from Jaedyn Williams.
Miranda Chase, who was a big part of the Lady Tiger defense, sat out the third period with four fouls. Alva added ten points to seven for Newkirk in the quarter. Durkee hit another three-pointer and a basket. Clark had a basket and a free throw while Brooke Perez contributed two free throws to widen the margin to 32-28.
Miranda Chase returned to the floor in the fourth but soon fouled out. With five minutes to go, the score was tied at 35 all. Newkirk led 37-35 when Durkee sank a three-pointer to put the Ladybugs on top. The lead changed hands several times coming down to 42-41 in Newkirk’s favor in the final seconds. The Ladybugs missed a couple of chances at the basket, and just before the buzzer Vap was fouled. She made both free throws to keep the win for Newkirk 44-41.
