Herbert Louis Niles was born April 20, 1932, in Cherokee, Oklahoma. He grew up on the family homestead south of Cherokee with his parents, Verg and Ona, and his sister Vergie.

He graduated from Lambert High School, Northwestern Oklahoma State University, and had a masters degree in mathematics from Western Colorado University in Gunnison, Colorado. He taught school in Wichita, Kansas, for many years before returning to Cherokee to teach and help with the farm. He was Parthena McCrady's right hand man for nearly 40 years.
