Alva Goldbugs win 55-32 over Tonkawa

After losing a string of four games, the Alva Goldbugs won on Senior Night against the Tonkawa Buccaneers 55-32. The Bucs are struggling and came into the game with a 1-8 record while Alva was 9-9.

The Tonkawa girls were unable to play due to Covid, and there wasn't enough time to arrange for another opponent for the Ladybugs.

Sophomore Kyler Penco was hot at the hoop in the first half, scoring 14 points to lead the Goldbugs while Jackson Feely was having a good night on the boards. At the end of the first quarter, Alva led 15-7. At halftime, the Goldbugs were on top 31-14. The Goldbugs outscored Tonkawa 13 to 6 to lead 44-20 at the end of the third. In the final quarter, the Alva JV took the floor, and the Bucs edged the Goldbugs 12-11 for the final of Alva 55, Tonkawa 32.

Alva scoring was led by sophomore Penco with 18 followed by Feely who posted 11 points and 12 rebounds. Austin Reed was also in double figures with 10. Braden Hofen made six points, Jaxon Jones three, Weston Tucker three, Aiden Ruiz two and Chuck Shelite 2. Tucker's three came just before the ending buzzer.


Tonkawa was led by two freshmen, Cooper Braden with ten and Dominic Grein with eight. Jake Randall finished with five, Chazz Slavens with three, Breyer Bay with two, Ryan Morgan two and Jake Morgan two.

The Goldbugs are now 10-9 for the season and Tonkawa falls to 1-9.

Thursday night the Alva High School teams were headed to Frontier to take on the Mustangs.
