Burlington School News: What does a pink suitcase have to do with reading?

If you were to walk the halls at Burlington Public Schools, it is likely you would see the librarian, Mica Andrews, pulling a pink suitcase filled with books through the hall. Students have not been able to go to the library this school year due to Covid-19, but this did not stop Ms. Andrews from bringing the library to students.

This year Ms. Andrews has been challenging the kindergarten students to reach their reading goals. She aims to make reading fun for the students and does so by rewarding them for each goal met.

Their Accelerated Reader (AR) goal was two points for the first nine weeks of this semester.

Burlington librarian Mica Andrews rolls through the halls with her pink suitcase full of books, taking the library to the students.

Renaissance is an AR program that is student driven. With Renaissance, once their goal has been set, every time they take a test and pass, it waters a flower. Once the flower is fully colored the students know they have met their goal. After their first AR test, Ms. Andrews went to their classroom and rewarded them all with reading stickers.

Luckily with this age, they truly are excited to read about anything. For the kindergarten students to reach their AR goal they mainly read the Biscuit series, which is about a little yellow dog that goes on adventures. The books incorporate many words that the students have learned previously in pre-k and kindergarten.

"I am very fortunate that with Burlington being such a small school and this being my fourth year here, I have been able to get to know each student very well. So that is certainly an advantage when I go to load up my pink suitcase full of books," says Andrews.
