18th annual NWOSU Art Society Art Show March 7-26 in J.W. Martin Library

The artwork shown here is from the 2020 NWOSU Art Society Art Show. This year's show will take place March 7-26 in the J.W. Martin Library on the Alva campus.

The 18th annual Northwestern Oklahoma State University Art Society Art Show will take place March 7-26 in the J.W. Martin Library on the Alva campus and will be open during the library's regular business hours.

"Entries may be down a little this year because of Covid-19 concerns, but the art show is happening," Angelia Case, NAS sponsor, said. "We didn't do as much publicity on the art show this year because we just weren't positive whether we'd get to have it or not after having to cut it short last year, so we were just trying to play it by ear as long as we could. Even with not as much notice on getting entries in this year, we still have nearly 250 total pieces for the show. And, for the first time, we have more entries from our non-students than we do from our students."

Because of spring break, the library will be closed Sunday through Thursday, March 14-18, and will reopen Friday, March 19, from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, March 21, 1 p.m. to midnight. The library is closed on Saturdays.

Artwork entered includes photographs, paintings, drawings, quilts and more from Northwestern students, current and retired Northwestern employees and Northwestern alumni. Viewing is free and open to the public.

NAS has offered prize money to students in the past and will continue to do so this year; however, because of the pandemic club members were not able to do their normal fundraising to help provide for all prizes leaving them no choice but to reduce the prizes offered.

Prize ribbons will be awarded to all students and non-students placing first through third in all categories, along with Best of Show and People's Choice. A $50 cash prize will be awarded to the student winning Best of Show, and the students placing first place in each category will earn $10. Everyone entered in the show is eligible to receive the People's Choice cash prize of $25.

"We want to thank the Student Government Association for co-sponsoring our show again this year and providing $250 to help us with funding it," Case said. "We are especially grateful for this this year."

All artwork that earns an award in this show will be eligible for the Winners' Show that is tentatively scheduled for April 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Runnymede in downtown Alva during its regular First Friday Artwalk events unless Covid-19 causes a cancellation.

Non-winning art from the campus show may be picked up at the library on Monday, March 29, by 5:30 p.m. Artwork from the Winners' Show at the Runnymede may be picked up at the end of that show at 8 p.m. or from Ryerson Hall 211 on Monday, April 5, by 5:30 p.m.

"Because we had to shut down campus last year and end our show abruptly because of the pandemic, we actually still have a few art pieces in storage from last year's show that were never picked up, so we would really like to get these items back to their owners," Case said. "Just contact me to make an appointment to pick them up."
